Aunque probablemente fue el apóstol Juan quien acuñó el término «anticristo» (1 Jn 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 Jn 7), el concepto del anticristo aparece al principio de la historia bíblica. Nuestro objetivo en este breve artículo es esbozar a grandes rasgos la concepción que la Escritura tiene de este feroz enemigo.
El libro de Génesis puede parecer un lugar extraño para empezar a buscar cómo la Biblia anticipa a un enemigo en los últimos días, pero aquí descubrimos, en forma de semilla, las principales características del adversario de la humanidad. Dios formó a Adán y Eva a Su imagen para que gobernaran como reyes en Su nombre, para que sirvieran y mediaran en Su gloria como sacerdotes, y para que encarnaran y se enseñaran el uno al otro la ley de Dios como profetas (Gn 1:26-28; 2:15-17; 2:24). Un individuo —el diablo— al que yo llamo «antimagen» pervierte este oficio triple. En lugar de gobernar en nombre de Dios, esta antimagen intenta gobernar como Dios mismo. En lugar de preservar el espacio santo, esta antimagen lo profana. En lugar de proclamar la verdad de Dios, esta antimagen la tergiversa. Este individuo encarnó su triple agenda en 3:1-15 en la forma de una serpiente, y aprendemos en el protoevangelio (primer evangelio) que la simiente de la serpiente seguirá siendo hostil a la línea piadosa, es decir, que los descendientes de la serpiente harán continuamente la guerra contra el pueblo de Dios (Gn 3:15). Sin embargo, al final de la historia, el descendiente de Adán y Eva vencerá al maligno.
El Nuevo Testamento refina y aclara el retrato de este enemigo de Israel. Primero vemos a Jesús hablando de los adversarios de Israel en los últimos tiempos, utilizando el lenguaje del libro de Daniel: «Porque muchos vendrán en Mi nombre, diciendo: “Yo soy el Cristo”, y engañarán a muchos […] Se levantarán muchos falsos profetas, y a muchos engañarán» (Mt 24:5, 11; ver también Mt 24:23-26). Jesús prevé una figura anticristo que engañará a Israel antes de la destrucción del templo en el año 70 d. C. Su influencia será una señal de que la destrucción de Israel está cerca. En Mateo 24:5, el opresor se caracterizará por ser un engañador; afirmará ser «el Cristo» y con ello trastornará la fe de muchos. Los evangelios también descorren el telón, revelando que Satanás y sus secuaces están detrás de la falsa enseñanza y la persecución desenfrenada en el primer siglo y más allá (ver Lc 4:13; 6:7; 22:3; 23:3; Jn 8:42-47).
Uno de los comentarios más esclarecedores acerca de la naturaleza de los adversarios se encuentra en 2 Tesalonicenses 2, donde Pablo argumenta que la segunda venida de Cristo es un evento futuro porque ese día irá precedido de dos acontecimientos: la «apostasía» y la revelación del «hombre de pecado» (v. 3). El «hombre de pecado» aún no ha entrado en escena, pero, de forma alarmante, hay un sentido en que el opresor del final de los tiempos ya ha aparecido. Segunda de Tesalonicenses 2:7 dice: «El misterio de la iniquidad ya está en acción». Pablo emplea aquí la palabra misterio para describir una situación única con ramificaciones sorprendentes: según Daniel, el perseguidor del final de los tiempos se aparecerá con plena presencia corporal ante la comunidad del pacto en el futuro, pero Pablo argumenta que el antagonista «ya está en acción» en la comunidad. La posición de Pablo elucida la declaración posterior de Juan en 1 Juan 2:18: «Hijitos, es la última hora, y así como oyeron que el anticristo viene, también ahora han surgido muchos anticristos. Por eso sabemos que es la última hora». En pocas palabras, el opresor escatológico del pueblo de Dios está activo actualmente, inspirando a los falsos maestros y a los perseguidores de la iglesia.
Por supuesto, el libro de Apocalipsis es el que más aporta material para esbozar la naturaleza del anticristo. Vemos cómo Satanás anima e inspira al anticristo para lograr su objetivo. El capítulo 13 parece estar en consonancia con las demás enseñanzas del Nuevo Testamento sobre el tema, al decir que en el primer siglo el anticristo comenzó su obra de oprimir a los fieles dentro de la iglesia y de engañar y mancillar a los infieles, los falsos cristianos. El anticristo lo seguirá haciendo hasta que se manifieste de forma física, inmediatamente antes de la segunda venida de Cristo.
¿Cómo debe responder la iglesia a la influencia ya presente y aún por venir del anticristo? El pueblo de Dios debe hacer lo que siempre ha hecho: aferrarse a la sana doctrina y soportar la persecución. El antimesías continuará operando, pero debemos consolarnos al saber que el verdadero Mesías ha vencido al diablo y que Su victoria es nuestra victoria.
