About 15 to 20 years ago, I was in Bogotá, Colombia; and I was speaking at a Church which was largely a charismatic, pentecostal church. And after the conference, I met with the pastor of that church and with several pastors from the surrounding churches in Bogotá. And as we sat in the pastor’s study, I noticed that he had a Bible on the corner of his desk, but he had very few books on his shelves. Some were at home, but when I inquired about that Bible that was there on the corner of his desk, I asked him about it; and he said this Bible, we share among ourselves, that we each take this Bible for one quarter of the year, for three months of the year. And we work with the notes in that study Bible to help us in preparing our sermons for the next quarter or the next several months. And then, we take that Bible, and we pass it along to our friend who is a pastor. And they would rotate that Bible among themselves over the course of a year.
I realized at that moment as we spoke that they have very few commentaries, very few exegesis tools for doing sermon preparation, very few materials for discipleship. They had many books on Christian living and some books on theology, but what they most desperately needed, as they conveyed to me, was study helps in exegeting Scripture; that what they most desperately needed was to know how they could interpret and apply Scripture in their sermons and in their discipleship. It was at that moment I realized how great the need really was. And we were in Bogotá, Colombia; and I knew that the need was more or less greater, sometimes lesser, in other countries throughout the Spanish-speaking world. But the need of those pastors of somewhat sizable churches surprised me; and my immediate thought was how can we help get more Bibles, trusted Bibles with trustworthy theological and Biblical content, how can we get it into their hands? How can we serve the Church in Latin America and in the Spanish-speaking world by getting them what they really need? And they all confessed to me that the Bible they were using, they didn’t fully agree with. They realized that there were theological differences that they had, but it was all they had.
So I came back to the States. I sat down with Dr. Sproul, and I told him of my experience in Latin America, in Colombia. I said, “R.C., they need a Bible. They need a Bible they can trust. They need notes that they can trust, and they need Bibles…and they need Bibles, as well.” And so, immediately, we began to look toward a very long-term plan to produce the Reformation Study Bible in Spanish. We did not realize how much research, how much time, how many conversations with pastors and scholars and leaders in the Spanish-speaking world that we would need to speak with to make sure that we were providing the Church in Latin America and throughout Spanish-speaking world with exactly what is needed. And that has taken the past 15, 17 years.
